🐘 Manatee Rescue & Rehabilitation at ZooTampa

At the heart of ZooTampa’s conservation efforts is the David A. Straz, Jr. Manatee Critical Care Center. Since opening in 1991, the center has cared for over 600 manatees, making it the largest nonprofit facility of its kind. As of late 2024, the center was caring for 27 manatees—the most it has ever housed at one time. ​

The zoo’s expert team works tirelessly to rescue, rehabilitate, and release manatees back into the wild. Recent success stories include Habanero, a 685-pound male rescued after a watercraft collision, and Dawlee, a 1,000-pound female entangled in a crab pot. ​

ZooTampa also engages the next generation through educational programs. Middle school students participate in mock manatee rescues, learning about the challenges these gentle giants face and inspiring future conservationists. ​
